Summary
Reporting to the Recreation Manager, as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Recreation Aide assists in planning and implementing therapeutic programs to meet the social, cognitive, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents. All duties and responsibilities are carried out in alignment with Optima Living’s mission, vision, and values, promoting person-centered care. These are performed within the framework of established policies, procedures, and industry best practices, while adhering to applicable regulations.
**The Work Schedule is from 0815 to 1615 on a 4 weeks rotation.
**Week 1,3,4: Mon, Tue, Wed and Week 2: Mon, Wed, Sat (one Saturday shift per month)
**Please note, schedules may vary based on operational needs that may include holidays and evening events.
Responsibilities
- Assists residents to and from recreation programs.
- Assists in the development, planning, and organization of person-centred recreation programs such as arts and crafts, exercise classes, music, trivia, baking, gardening, etc.
- Facilitates a variety of programs, including large group, small group, and one-on-one activities.
- Creates and collaborates with team members to prepare monthly calendars, activities and events.
- Maintains effective communication and good human relations with residents, families and team members.
- Participates in the supervision of volunteers and students.
- Prepares areas for each program, maintains recreation equipment and keeps areas clean, tidy and safe
- Makes posters, decorates for seasonal events and keeps residents informed of upcoming events.
- Monitors and evaluates resident progress and tracks daily reporting of individual’s activities on Welbi.
- As directed by the Recreation Manager, interviews residents/family as necessary to gain information on residents past activities and lifestyles.
- Completes progress notes to document notable changes in residents.
- Reports all incidents and accidents within the recreation department immediately.
- Follows Occupational Health Safety Regulations.
- Completes orientation and annual mandatory educations.
- Supports new team members through their orientation process
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of Recreation Therapy / Human Services certification, diploma or degree is preferred.
- Experience in a residential care setting is preferred
- Completion of high school diploma
- Valid provincial class 4 driver's license is an asset
- Completion of CPR and First Aid is an asset
- Safe Food Handling Certificate and ProServe is preferred
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with peers, residents, visitors and operational partners
- Superior organizational skills with the ability to handle multi-resident requests
- Superior oral and written communication skills, fluently in English
- Demonstrate the ability to prioritize and problem solve
